Houseplant care during a heat wave: an indoor observation plan

Indoor houseplants in closed rooms usually tolerate a short heat wave far better than outdoor plants in the same weather. The risk is not zero, though, because three indoor conditions shift quickly once outdoor temperatures climb well above seasonal norms for several days: sun-facing windows can become hot enough to scorch leaves through the glass, potting mixes dry much faster than your normal rhythm, and any air conditioning you turn on creates its own new microclimate, including cold drafts near vents and noticeably drier air.
The most useful response is observation-led and slow. Over the next 48 to 72 hours, watch the window, the pot, and the leaves themselves, and resist the urge to overhaul your whole routine. What actually changes indoors during a heat wave
A typical indoor plant likes daytime temperatures around 70 to 80°F (21 to 27°C) and nighttime temperatures around 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C), according to the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. Most plants broadly grow well from about 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C), and Oregon State University Extension notes that sustained temperatures above 90°F (32°C) are where heat stress typically starts to show in many common species.
In a closed room during a multi-day heat wave, indoor air can run meaningfully hotter than outdoor shade, especially near windows and in older or poorly insulated homes. A University of Arizona article on home heat notes that at an outdoor temperature of 110°F (43°C), older houses can feel at least 10°F (about 6°C) warmer inside. Think of that gap as a directional hint, not a precise number for your room. The point is that a sunny windowsill in a closed-up home can climb several degrees above what the thermostat suggests.
Three indoor shifts follow from that:
- Window radiant heat. Sun-facing glass and the wall area around it can heat up enough that leaves touching the pane or pressed close to it absorb more radiant heat than they would outdoors with airflow.
- Faster soil dry-down. Warmer air and warmer surfaces pull moisture out of the pot faster. A mix that normally dries in a week may dry in two or three days, and small or terracotta pots dry faster than large or plastic ones because there is less soil volume to hold moisture.
- Air conditioning side effects. Once you turn on AC, the room itself usually cools, but the side effects matter: cold drafts at supply vents, and indoor relative humidity often drops, especially in dry climates. What to watch on the plant itself over the next 48 to 72 hours
Extension and botanical-garden descriptions of leaf scorch are consistent enough to use as a reading guide. The Missouri Botanical Garden and Purdue Plant Doctor both describe scorch as a water-transport problem: roots cannot keep up with the water the leaves are losing, so the tissue farthest from the roots dries first. That usually means edges and tips browning and then expanding inward, especially on plants with large leaves. Utah State University Extension describes the same edge-and-tip pattern on plants with large leaves, and Morton Arboretum notes that scorch damage is often concentrated on the side of the plant facing the sun, a draft, or a reflected-heat surface like a brick wall.
A few observational rules of thumb for indoor plants:
- Brown patches concentrated on the side of the plant facing a window, or on leaves actually touching the glass, point to radiant heat or sun-scald more than to drought.
- Browning across the whole plant, mainly at tips and edges, with rapid pot dry-down, points more toward the roots not keeping up, either from underwatering or from a root problem that heat is exposing. - Dry, papery patches or accelerated leaf drop on the side of the plant nearest an AC supply vent is the pattern to suspect for cold-draft damage. This is a plausible reading rather than a confirmed rule, since the underlying evidence is mostly about trees, shrubs, and outdoor reflected heat, but the spatial logic transfers. - Curling, cupping, or downward-folding leaves during the hottest hours can be the plant reducing its light and heat load rather than a sign of thirst. Check the soil before adding water.
Watering during a heat wave: how to check before you add water
The most common heat-wave watering mistake indoors is panic watering into soil whose subsoil is still wet, because the top dries faster than the deeper root zone. University of Minnesota Extension recommends timing watering for early in the day so roots are hydrated before peak heat, which is sound directionally; in a hot living room, watering in the morning gives the plant access to moisture through the hottest hours.
The practical alternative to a fixed schedule is observation, which we cover in how to tell when a houseplant actually needs water. Lift the pot when it has just been thoroughly watered and note the weight. Lift it again the next day, and the day after. During a heat wave you may find a pot that normally feels light at day seven feels light at day three. That is your new reference, not a rule to apply across the whole shelf.
For most indoor pots during a heat wave, a reasonable sequence is:
- Check the top inch with a finger or wooden skewer, then check a second inch deeper in the pot.
- Lift the pot. If it feels heavier than your “dry” reference, wait and recheck tomorrow.
- If it feels at or below your dry reference and the deeper soil also feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains, then let the pot drain freely. Do not let the pot sit in standing water.
- If the plant is wilting but the soil is still moist, the issue is more likely heat load or root damage than thirst. Adding more water into already-wet soil is a common way to trade heat stress for root rot. Where to move plants, and where not to move them
Relocation is the other common overcorrection. A few principles:
- Move plants a foot or two back from a south- or west-facing window during peak afternoon hours, or hang a sheer curtain, without dropping them into deep shade. The goal is to reduce radiant heat, not to remove light.
- Move plants off windowsills where leaves are touching the glass. Even a small gap helps; leaves pressed to hot glass take the brunt of the radiant load.
- Do not move a plant from inside to a sunny patio or balcony as a “fresh air” fix during a heat wave. Outdoor sun, drying wind, and the sudden light jump are far more stressful than the indoor conditions you are trying to escape.
- Do not crowd plants together in a shadier corner in hopes of raising humidity. Without airflow and with their leaves overlapping, you trade one stress for a higher risk of fungal problems once conditions cool.

What not to do during a heat wave
The list of “do not” is short and worth keeping visible:
- Do not switch to a fixed “water every day” or “water twice a day” schedule. Heat waves compress dry-down unevenly across pots. Use pot weight and subsoil moisture, not the calendar.
- Do not treat misting as a cooling method. The supplied extension and botanical-garden sources do not establish that misting meaningfully lowers leaf temperature. Misting at best nudges humidity for a few minutes and does not substitute for handling window heat, soil moisture, or AC drafts.
- Do not repot, fertilize, or prune aggressively during the event. Stressed plants do not benefit from a fresh soil interface, a salt load, or a major leaf cut while they are already working to keep their plumbing running.
- Do not move plants suddenly into direct outdoor sun as a “summer vacation.” The light jump alone can scorch leaves that have been acclimated to indoor conditions.
- Do not assume wilting means thirst. Heat load and root damage produce wilting in soil that is already moist. Adding more water in that case is how heat stress turns into root rot.
After the heat wave: what recovers, what doesn’t, and when to ask for local help
Once outdoor temperatures return to normal and your room settles, give the plants a few days before judging. Extension guidance is consistent that damaged tissue from sun-scald and heat scorch does not reverse; the affected areas stay brown and dry. Recovery means the plant growing new, healthy leaves that replace the damaged ones, which can take weeks for slow growers and longer for plants that lost most of their foliage.
A reasonable after-event routine:
- Leave damaged leaves on the plant until you see clear new growth. They still photosynthesize at reduced capacity and protect what is underneath. Trim them only once new leaves are coming in.
- Return to your normal watering rhythm gradually, based on pot weight and subsoil moisture, not on a calendar reset.
- Hold off on fertilizing for a few weeks. Stressed roots and fresh fertilizer are a poor combination.
- If a plant has lost most of its leaves, or if stems have gone soft or shriveled, take a clear photo and a sample to a local nursery or your regional extension office. Indoor conditions, potting mix, water quality, and the specific plant matter, and a local expert can usually tell you more from a photo and a feel than any general article can.
Different plant groups carry different risk during a heat wave. Succulents and cacti tolerate heat and dry soil best, so for them the main watch-point is intense window light rather than watering. Many tropical foliage plants tolerate short warm spells but dislike sudden dry air, so humidity and AC drafts matter more than temperature. Ferns and similar thin-leaved, high-humidity plants such as Calathea and peace lily are usually the first to flag and the slowest to recover once they wilt from dryness.
A heat wave is one of those events where the calmest response is also the most useful. Watch the windows, watch the pots, watch the leaves, and resist the urge to make five changes at once. The plants most often lost during a heat wave indoors are lost to overcorrection, not to the heat itself.
