East-facing vs west-facing windows for houseplants

On paper, east-facing and west-facing windows can deliver a similar total daily light dose, but the timing, glass heat, and intensity profile differ sharply. An east-facing window gives you a short, cool dose of direct morning sun, then bright indirect light for the rest of the day. A west-facing window gives you bright indirect light in the morning that builds into stronger, hotter direct sun in the afternoon. Neither one is universally better. East is usually the lower-risk default for most foliage houseplants, while west is workable if you watch for heat, leaf scorch, and faster soil dry-down, or if you set the plant back from the glass. The honest answer depends on your latitude, season, exterior obstructions, the glazing on your windows, and how the specific plant responds in the first two or three weeks.
The short answer: east and west are not opposites, but they trade off
The temptation is to treat east and west as a simple gentle-versus-harsh ranking. They are not that. The meaningful difference is not how much total light reaches the plant. It is when the light arrives, how hot the room and the glass already are, and how long the direct-sun window lasts. What an east-facing window actually delivers
Direct sun arrives shortly after sunrise, typically for a shorter dose than the afternoon west window will deliver, and shorter still in winter at mid-latitudes. The light is at a low angle and the air is still cool from the night, so the glass usually does not heat up much. After the sun moves past the window’s line of sight, the rest of the day is bright indirect light, sometimes shaded by neighboring buildings, eaves, or trees outside. What a west-facing window actually delivers
In the morning the west window is shaded. As the afternoon arrives, direct sun enters at a steeper angle than in the morning, the room is already warm, and the glass can heat up noticeably. The University of Idaho Extension notes that south- and west-facing windows receive more sun and tend to be warmer than east- and north-facing windows, which is the underlying framing for the warmer-glass claim you will see in most houseplant guides. In summer at mid-latitudes, an unobstructed west window can deliver a long, hot dose of direct sun in the late afternoon — long enough to push a foliage houseplant past its comfort zone, especially if a leaf is touching the glass. Specific hour counts vary widely with latitude, season, and what sits outside the window, so they are not worth quoting as a rule.
Side by side: intensity, duration, heat, and dry-down
A simple comparison helps here, kept in qualitative language because the actual values depend on your latitude, season, glazing, and outside obstructions.
- Time of direct sun: east is morning, west is afternoon.
- Peak intensity: east is moderate and cool, west is strong and hot.
- Duration of direct sun in summer at mid-latitudes: east is usually shorter, often just a brief morning dose; west is usually longer, sometimes a sustained late-afternoon dose.
- Glass temperature during direct sun: east usually feels mild to the back of your hand, west can feel hot.
- Soil dry-down: east is moderate, west is often faster, especially in a warm room.
- Distance into the room where light is usable: both deliver direct light to roughly 3 feet and indirect light to roughly 5 feet, per NYBG.
If your goal is to choose where to put a heat-sensitive foliage plant, the lower-risk row across almost every category is east. If you want to grow something that genuinely likes strong, hot afternoon sun, west is the better match.
How to read your specific window, not the rule
The reason compass direction is only a starting point is that two homes on the same street can have very different east and west windows. A tall building across the street, a mature tree, a deep eave, or frosted glass will all change what the plant actually receives. The reliable method is to observe.
Do a shadow test at three times of day at each window: mid-morning, midday, and mid-afternoon. A sharp, dark shadow on the wall or floor means direct sun. A soft, fuzzy-edged shadow means bright indirect light. No real shadow at all means the light is dim. Compare what you see at your east window and your west window, and write down the result. Then put the back of your hand on the glass during the direct-sun period. A noticeably hot pane is your cue that the window is doing more than delivering light; it is also delivering heat. The sun’s altitude in the sky changes through the year, which changes how directly light enters a given window. In summer the sun rides higher and the direct-sun window through an east or west exposure can be longer and more intense. In winter the sun stays low, so the same east or west window gets a shorter, weaker dose of direct light, and the room itself is cooler. What “better” actually means for your plants
Better, in this context, means which trade-off fits the plant and your routine.

It is a better match for plants that genuinely like strong, hot afternoon light — sun-loving succulents, many herbs, and flowering houseplants that need intense bright conditions to bloom. The honest framing is that east lowers risk and west raises it, but west also raises the ceiling for what you can grow. The right answer depends on which plants you are trying to keep alive and which you are trying to push.
Reading the plant in the first two to three weeks
Whatever window you choose, the plant will tell you whether you guessed right. Watch for these signals over the first two or three weeks. These are general horticultural signs rather than extension-cited rules, so use them as starting points rather than diagnostics.
- Leaf orientation. Leaves turned toward the window are reaching for more light. Leaves turned away or held flat are usually comfortable.

- Scorch pattern. Tan or bleached patches, or crispy brown edges on the side of the plant closest to the glass, are a sign the window is too hot or too bright for that species.
- Soil dry-down. If the top inch of soil dries noticeably faster than the same plant would in another spot, the window is delivering more heat than you expected.
When you change windows, change one variable at a time. Move the plant and keep the watering routine the same for a week, so you can tell whether the new spot is the cause of any change you see.
When the rule flips, and what to do
There are several situations where the east-versus-west comparison stops being useful.
- Heavy exterior obstructions. A tree or a neighboring building can shorten or eliminate the direct-sun window on either side, making east and west behave like medium or low light. - Double-glazed, low-emissivity glass. High-performance glazing reduces solar heat gain, which softens the hot character of a west window and can make the two orientations feel closer than the compass alone suggests.
- Southern hemisphere homes. The sun tracks across the north side of the sky. East and west still differ in the timing of direct sun, but the seasonal and intensity patterns shift, and a south-facing window in the southern hemisphere is the cool side, not the hot one.
- Small or deeply recessed windows. If the window is small, the direct-sun dose is short on either side, and the comparison loses most of its meaning.
- Overcast climates. In places with frequent marine-layer fog or winter cloud cover, the intensity difference between east and west shrinks, and orientation matters less than unobstructed sky.
